Where I Stand

My journey of faith has been cyclical. There have been periods of deep belief when I took scripture literally and accepted the fundamentals of Christianity without question. Though that was early in my life.

There have been times of moderate faith when I sincerely examined my beliefs and searched for answers to my nagging questions. Is the Bible without errors? Is the Virgin Birth necessary? Why is there a hell? What is sin? What if there wasn’t a resurrection? Can’t the crucifixion be enough? Isn’t Jesus dying in love sufficient? Why is Christianity the only true faith? And many more questions.

And there have been times of honest doubt. Times when it all seemed trite and superficial, arrogant and superstitious. When God was little more than a jealous tyrant and Jesus a good but misunderstood teacher. When the church was a clique and membership catered to the wealthy and the influential, the ones who chaired all the important committees and ran the budget process. And the poor were looked down on and rarely recruited. And the uneducated were sidelined and left out of key decisions. And worship wasn’t dignified and sacred, inspirational and affirming, wise and instructive, but hoopla and chatter, bands and raised hands and the atmosphere of a sporting event or a band concert. Little more than hype and stimulated emotion.

Today my beliefs are centered around the puzzling and often desperate longings of humanity. Actually, any authentic faith I ever possessed has always been from that focus. I tried for years to make it the core of my ministry, the theme of my preaching, and the heart of any worship where I was a leader.

Sometimes it was misunderstood. Sometimes it was criticized. But often it was gladly received and accepted.

I do not attend church now, even online. I quit actually attending some years ago. I was broke and had no tithes or offerings to give. When I left I was never contacted by my pastor. The associate pastor called to remind me I still had a number of books left in the small office I used. I left them there for the church library. I didn’t take the lack of contact personally. It’s a large church and members come and go. But I often emailed the senior pastor and praised his thoughtful and gifted preaching. Sometimes he would reply.

As time has gone by I have a feeling of loss about the church. It seems in crisis and has been suffering from a lack of meaningful influence for far too long. I am certain it still provides comfort and affirmation to many loyal to its services. But I don’t see the Christian Church adding to the health of society. Or ministering to the enormous needs that exist in this country. Or taking a courageous and highly public stand against racial hatred, police brutality, gun violence, the judgment of gays, the demeaning of women, the worship and hypocrisy of politics and politicians, and the offensive diluting of the essential teachings of Jesus Christ.

Conservative evangelicals and even the majority of Christians have always thrived on a sense of embattlement. Historically, it was the fight against sin and satan. More recently, the battle is against Democrats, the liberal media, and socialism, which is really human services to those in need, the very thing Jesus taught and modeled. They fight gun legislation and abortion rights and care little for the consequences of their harsh judgments and wildly cynical outrages.

I have no use for these things. Or the leaders who promote and profit from them. And I am stunned by the gullibility of those who support them.

Give me the quiet of nature. The giggles of children. The affection of pets. The sacredness of love that endures. Let me be overcome with the brilliance of sunsets and the cool breezes that float off the ocean. The rhythm of the seasons. The independence of wildlife. The calm of a spring rain shower. The cleanness of snow. The clutching of autumn leaves turning colors before they let go. That, to me, is spiritual.

Here is where my beliefs are born and restored. And in them I find the divine, the holy, and the unexplainable beauty that softens my humanity and strengthens my resolve and helps me be okay with myself and with all those I love and to the stranger I do not know.

It may not be a conventional faith. But it’s mine. And I make every effort to serve the meaning it provides.

RYS 072: Work to Grow Beyond Ego

In this Episode:

Having the heart to honestly evaluate ourselves brings us deep peace and personal satisfaction. Moving away from behaving carelessly and toward remaining aware of our actions and how they impact us, others, and all life is a result of the questions we ask—and the actions we take to better ourselves in response to the answers we receive.

• One of the first steps to leading with heart is learning to remain aware of the deceptions a self-centered (ego) view creates.
• Ego creates misconceptions that other people are totally at fault while we are completely innocent.
• With persistent and truthful self-assessment, the pain of struggling with the attachment we have to who we believe ourselves to be (ego) falls away.

RYS 049: Soul is Whole no Matter How Wounded Your Human Being

In this Episode:

Our mind is not the faithful part of us, no matter how loudly and persistently it tells us it is. Our mind thinks, and with our soul or heart’s wisdom, we have the awareness to question those thoughts to discover how irrational, limiting and judgmental our thoughts can often be.

• When we reach the point of finally getting fed up with our miserable life and feeling out of control we realized it is our negative thoughts that keep us living as a victim of our past.
• With the higher wisdom of soul we can determine if what we are thinking is real, true, or important.
• No matter what challenge we face in life the guidance we need is already there within us, waiting for us to call upon it.

RYS 029: Grass is Greenest Where You Water It

In this Episode:

You may have heard the saying the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. I happen to like the variation author Erma Bombeck created in her bestselling book, The Grass is Always Greener over the Septic Tank. It’s not necessarily true grass is greener on the other side of the fence. It is true grass is greenest where it gets the attention, water, and nutrients it needs to flourish.

• Happiness, success, joy, peace, etc., must be grown.
• What we pay attention to is what grows in our life.
• The more effort we put into something the better the outcome.

RYS 027: How to Live Without Regret

In this Episode:

Life can change in a heart-beat. One day we’re coasting along then BAM we get directed down another road. The truth is, we’re not ever going to control life and the challenges and changes that arise. Attempting to keep ourselves, life, or other people from changing, is as futile as trying to collect water in a colander.

• Change is inevitable but we can always choose our attitude toward change.
• Focusing on regret keeps us trapped in a state of perpetual sorrow, disappointment and feeling powerless.
• We do have power to take action to prevent events that can cause regret.

RYS 024: Love Expresses Emotion in Healthy Ways

In this Episode:

No matter how smooth and fulfilling life is there will be times when you get angry. You are going to get frustrated, disappointed, be inconvenienced or experience pain as a result of other people’s behavior. It is healthy to acknowledge emotions like anger or frustration. It is not healthy to suppress upsetting emotions or to take it out on other people, animals, or yourself.

• Emotions cannot be stuffed to be dealt with at another time.
• Repression of emotions is a major cause of addictions, abuse, depression, and disease in our culture.
• Love encourages the healthy expression of emotions and never discounts what another person is feeling.

RYS 023: Say What You Mean and Mean What You Say

In this Episode:

Healthy relationships are founded on mutual respect and trust. But being respected and trusted comes from being honest. Part of honesty is saying what we mean and meaning what we say. Our word is our bond. If our words and actions do not align we have not been honest. We can’t establish trust or respect if we are not comfortable saying NO upfront to requests we do not want to do.

• Being liked is not nearly as important as being respected.
• Going against what we recognize is true for us results in regret, disappointment, and suffering.
• It is okay to ask people for help. And, it is okay to say no.

RYS 022: Boundaries Create a New You for the New Year

In this Episode:

The Solution is One Resolution

I no longer make a list of New Year’s resolutions. For way too many years I set myself up declaring all the things I was going to change about myself, yet did not stick with long enough to actually achieve the change I wanted. Then I would spend the next eleven and a half months beating myself up for not keeping the resolutions I made. So this year join me in breaking the habit of making a long list of resolutions. Let’s identify one thing to concentrate on, one new skill that we can master to the point we make it a consistent part of our new 2015 life-style.

• Good relationships have good boundaries
• Saying NO is not selfish
• Big difference between love and rescue

RYS 020: We Cannot Change Other People But we Can Love Them

In this Episode:

Feelings of powerlessness, disappointment, stress, and resentment come from holding on to a fantasy of what we want someone to be rather than accepting the truth of who they really are. Consistent actions are proof of who someone is. The truth is, their behavior is telling us who they are.
• Believing what someone says while ignoring their opposite behavior is not loving yourself or them.
• Your love does not magically create change in others.
• The only love powerful enough to motivate someone to change anything about themselves is self-love.

RYS 017: Love Lets the Little Things Slide

In this Episode:

No matter what we do, no matter how many times we ask, there are minor things about those we love that we just have to let go. They are not going to change. We can’t get them to change. Maybe they are working on changing other, more important things about themselves. Maybe they just don’t want to. Minor irritations are not worth wasting our precious energy.

• You and I are not perfect and neither are those we love.
• Love lets the little irritations slide.
• Love appreciates we all have different ways of doing things.
